The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) descended on Las Vegas last week, offering an insight into the tech that will fill our homes in the coming year.

Despite dwindling numbers as a result of Covid-19 and some high profile absentees by way of Meta, Google and Amazon, CES 2022 still provided an exciting look at the emerging tech the world’s biggest companies have their sights set on unleashing.

A whole lot of stuff was revealed over the three days. As such, DIGIT has rounded up eight of the coolest pieces of tech unveiled at CES 2022.

8 – TP-LINK ARCHER AXE200 OMNI

It’s a router with four motorised blades that seek out the best signal possible. There’s many that would argue that the impact of having blades – much like waving your mobile phone in a field – would present a negligible benefit. But, it’s still a neat concept and would certainly prove useful for people that to squeeze every bit of juice out of their internet that they can.

7 – PSVR2

Sony’s next generation virtual reality offering is shaping up to be a sizeable step forward compared to the original.

The PSVR2 is an impressive piece of tech, offering a panel refresh rate and a frame rate of up to 120hz. An OLED screen displays games in 4K resolution, specifically 2000×2040 per eye. And it’ll feature a field of view of “approximately” 110 degrees.

On top of this, one of the biggest leaps forward from the original PSVR is the inclusion of two ‘Sense’ controllers featuring haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and finger-touch detection – the controller can sense your inputs without the need to push any buttons.

6 – Razer Project Sophia

Razer have become somewhat renowned for unveiling conceptually eye-catching tech at CES that, more often than not, never makes it market. However, it always presents a fascinating insight into what’s possible and that seems to be very much the case with Project Sophia.

A incredibly slick modular desktop computer (that is, in itself a very futuristic looking desk), Project Sophia offers customisation of 13 modules that can fitted with things like temperature readouts, touchscreen application launchers, dedicated chat and calendar displays, wireless Qi chargers, a mug heater, pen tablets, audio mixers, CPU and GPU monitors, and more.

As for the actual PC part, the chassis is magnetically attached making for easy upgrades and switch-outs as necessary. All of this is illuminated by a 66 or 77-inch OLED panel.

Razer has toyed with the idea of modular desktop computers in the past, but this one we hope they see over the line.

5 – Samsung Freestyle

We could talk endlessly about phones, processors and TVs and while it’s very well and good, seeing incremental improvements on older tech, it’s arguably more interesting to see what the big companies can come up with in terms of tech that runs somewhat adjacent to its usual offerings.

Such is the case with the Samsung Freestyle – a portable projector that can also act as a smart speaker and a light show. You might be thinking that cramming a few features into one prodct isn’t too earth-shattering, but, the Freestyle can be used on coloured walls (topping out at 1080p), which is pretty great.

Also, it’s ability to run it off a USB-C PD power bank, makes it top-of-class for portability.

4 – Withings Body Scan

Healthtech is quickly proliferating – a mix of advancements in the industry and more conscious public focus on self healthcare bringing this kind of tech firmly under the spotlight.

One of the most interesting examples of emerging healthtech seen at this year’s CES was the Withings Body Scan that at first glance, just seems like a very sleek set of scales.

However, it’s much more. It can perform an ECG thanks to the included handle, has body composition tools and the ability to measure nerve activity.

3 – Labrador Retriever

Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) are already fairly ubiquitous in things like manufacturing but this neatly designed consumer model is another example of the timely emergence of welltech.

Far beyond an Alexa on wheels, the Labrador Retriever can – in essence – fetch and move things. This, on paper, might not seem so mind-blowing, but for the millions of infirm who struggle to achieve simple tasks within their own home, means this is undoubtedly some of the coolest tech at CES 2022.

The system works via touch screen, voice, or through a mobile app. The robot can also respond to certain programmed reminders, delivering particular objects or completing designated tasks at the right time.

Labrador Retriever is self-driving and guides itself through homes using a proprietary navigation system that fuses algorithms from Augmented Reality with robotics to create 3D maps of the home.

2 – LG’s OLED Media Chair

We like to think that LG’s Media Chair concept is inspired by the king of arcade machines (pictured alongside it’s more technical, and not at all related progeny).

Entertainment pods are hardly new (again, arcade machine). However, the Media Chair is actually one we hope moves out of the prototype phase. It’s beautifully design doesn’t err into the obnoxious and the tech that is there in the concept is well within the realms of believability.

As it stands, the Media Chair has speakers in the chair itself, and a speaker in the form of the OLED panel, thanks to LG Display’s Cinematic Sound OLED (CSO) tech that vibrates the screen to produce audio.

This is all centred around a 55-inch OLED panel with a 1500R curve that adjusts it position (and can be viewed in portrait or landscape) so that always have the best view, no matter what angle you’re reclining at.

1 – Self-Driving Tractor

Okay maybe a tractor – in some people’s view – doesn’t have any business being on a ‘coolest tech at CES 2022’ list but this could one game-changing tractor.

John Deere’s – who have been in the farming game since the 19th century – first-ever self-driving tractor can drive and plough fields all by itself thanks to the six pairs of cameras that offer it a full view of its surroundings. The camera capture is then fed into an AI deep neural network to aid in detecting obstacles and calculate distances.

The fact that the machine can work fields for longer (perpetually, if required) and can operate in any conditions that us frail humans would scoff at mean that this piece could have serious applications in agriculture.
