On November 10, Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market cap, hit historic highs of over $80,000.

This price surge, which saw Bitcoin reach as high as $81,500, marks an unprecedented high and reflects a 65.4% increase from its January low of $38,505. Analysts attribute much of this rally to the recent U.S. federal election, which concluded with Donald Trump securing the presidency.

This outcome has spurred optimism among cryptocurrency advocates, as Trump’s pro-crypto stance promises a friendlier regulatory environment for the digital asset industry.

The Political Catalyst: Trump’s Win and Legislative Control

Donald Trump’s victory was coupled with Republican control of both the House and Senate. This legislative control is expected to streamline any pro-crypto policies and regulatory changes proposed by the new administration. Trump has pledged to position the United States as “the crypto capital of the planet,” and his return to office comes with a renewed promise to support cryptocurrency through reduced regulatory burdens.

During the campaign, Trump often criticised current regulatory practices, pledging to dismiss SEC Chairman Gary Gensler, whose aggressive stance has sparked tensions with the industry. Trump’s team has hinted at efforts to form a Bitcoin treasury as part of his administration’s financial policy, using seized Bitcoin from criminal investigations as a government asset rather than selling it.

The market reaction to Trump’s win was eyebrow-raising, with Bitcoin jumping above $75,000 shortly after election night. Other cryptocurrencies also experienced significant gains.

Ethereum, Dogecoin, and other assets saw notable price increases, adding over $250 billion to the overall crypto market capitalisation. Dogecoin, in particular, surged over 50% on speculation that Elon Musk, an outspoken Dogecoin advocate and Trump supporter, might play a role in the administration.

The combination of a Bitcoin-friendly government and Musk’s influence in the tech and crypto spheres has fueled speculation about potential mainstream adoption and regulatory favor for cryptocurrencies.

Musk’s endorsement has remained potent in the crypto community – he has previously touted Dogecoin as the “currency of the internet” and proposed a“Department of Government Efficiency,” abbreviated as DOGE, to streamline bureaucracy.

In the coming months, as Trump’s administration takes shape and further details of its crypto policy emerge, Bitcoin’s future – and that of the broader crypto market – remains on an optimistic upward trajectory.
