Sky Plans to Cut 600 UK Jobs in Tech Transformation

The media giant is shifting its technology team’s focus to existing products rather than expansion.

Sky is launching a review that could see about 600 workers lose their jobs as it aims to thin out its technology teams in Livingston, Leeds, and Osterley.

The telecoms giant has started a consultation of 900 employees, with expectations of cutting about two thirds of reviewed workers.

The cuts follow expansions of Sky’s offerings, with the launching of several products like Sky Glass, Sky Stream, and its full fibre broadband, the company said.

“These products are now firmly established and used by millions of customers, strengthening Sky’s reputation for innovation and great service,” a spokesperson for Sky said. The company aims to shift its focus to running existing services, which will see much of its technology staff gutted.

“As we look ahead, we are shifting our approach to bring customers the next generation of experience by investing in digital-first service, unbeatable content, and even better performance from our products, powered by the best of global innovation,” the spokesperson said.

With Sky Watermark’s central site based in Livingston, its contact centre at Kirkton Campus, and many tech, product and data teams based in the city, the could see its job market rocked by the changes.

Sky does suggest that the redundancies are not in an effort to cut costs, but rather to transition the technology team’s focus. The cuts will not be performance-based, and employees will have options to relocate to other departments within Sky.
