Tesla has been approved by the UK’s energy regulator to begin supplying electricity to British households and businesses.
Elon Musk’s energy company has been granted the electricity supply licence, allowing it to operate as an electricity provider across England, Scotland, and Wales.
The firm however will not be able to offer a dual fuel contract – it will be permitted to offer electricity but not gas, which customers must agree with a different supplier.
Tesla is expected to model its UK presence after its business in Texas where it operated a virtual power plant. This enables Tesla electric car owners to charge their car and then sell electricity they store in their Powerwall home batteries back to the electric grid.
This virtual power plant is offered by Octopus Energin in the UK.
The approval for the company came after a seven month process, allowing Tesla to sell electricity to domestic as well as non domestic customers in the UK.
The company will now be required to follow UK energy regulations and be subject to continuous regulatory oversight. It must meet requirements on consumer protection, operational capability, financial resilience, fair treatment to customers, and billing transparency.
