IT Budgets Might be Increasing, But an Eye on Spend is Vital

IT spending is top of mind for organisations. While in years gone by, organisations have been forced to do more with less or go without when it comes to tech investments, we have seen that trend changing. Data has revealed that 55% of businesses will increase their IT spending this year by around 11% on average.  

This is no different when it comes to the cloud, where, according to Forrester, cloud investments account for half of all software spend, making the cloud the second largest expense at many IT and SaaS companies. Despite this, two-thirds of companies can’t accurately report on their cloud costs. 

But the ever-changing macroeconomic and geopolitical environment can impact organisations in an instant. Equally, one thing many learned from the pandemic was that given this potential for chance, organisations must maximise – and gain visibility of – their IT investments, including that of the cloud – optimising it as much as possible to suit their needs both now and in the future.  

However, organisations typically encounter challenges along the way.  

Being clear on the challenges 

One common pitfall is resource utilisation gaps, where cloud resources sit idle or underutilised, leading to unnecessary costs – the technological equivalent of paying for office space when you only need a few desks. In this instance, organisations often struggle to accurately forecast demand and right-size their cloud resources, resulting in overcapacity and wasted spend.  

Another challenge lies in the complexity of cloud pricing models, with cloud providers offering a variety of options, including on-demand, reserved instances, spot instances, and savings plans. Navigating these options can be daunting as organisations often default to the simplest but most expensive choices, which can significantly impact their cloud bill and limit potential savings.  

Furthermore, scaling inefficiencies pose a significant challenge. While automatic scaling is a powerful feature, it can lead to unnecessary costs if not properly configured. For instance, workloads may run 24/7 when they’re only needed during business hours, resulting in substantial wasted spend during off-peak times.    

Recognising where challenges exist is one thing, though – overcoming them is different without the right guidance and insight.  

Three routes to cloud optimisation 

Typically, I find that there are three routes to get the most from your cloud infrastructure: via resource efficiency, use of smart purchasing models and by carefully considering the architecture of your cloud.  

Optimising cloud infrastructure requires a comprehensive approach that addresses resource efficiency, makes use of smart purchasing models, and incorporates cost-conscious architectural considerations.  

Modern cloud environments demand dynamic resource management, and cloud providers offer various tools to achieve this. For example, compute optimisation involves matching instance types to workload requirements by analysing CPU, memory, and I/O patterns. For this, graviton processors can offer better price performance for compatible workloads, further enhancing efficiency.

Additionally, implementing storage tiering allows organisations to automatically move data based on access patterns, ensuring cost-effective storage utilisation. 

Smart purchasing models are another key aspect of cloud optimisation. Many cloud providers offer various pricing models to cater to different needs and budgets. On-demand pricing provides maximum flexibility with pay-as-you-go rates, while savings plans offer substantial discounts for committed use.

For flexible workloads, spot instances provide organisations with access to spare compute capacity creating significant cost savings.  

Finally, a cost-efficient cloud architecture requires careful planning and consideration. Selecting the right region for your workload can impact costs due to pricing differences between regions. Enhancing your network design through proper availability zone usage and Content Delivery Network implementation can minimise data transfer costs.

Therefore, picking appropriate services based on workload patterns is also crucial, with serverless options offering cost-effective solutions for variable workloads.  

Ongoing optimisation 

Optimising cloud costs isn’t a one-time fix, though; it’s an ongoing journey that requires continuous monitoring and adjustment. Think of it like tending a garden – regularly weeding, pruning, and nurturing it will guarantee healthy growth.  

To achieve sustained cost optimisation, organisations should establish regular review cycles. Monthly cost analysis reports provide valuable insights into spending patterns and highlight potential areas for improvement. Additionally, quarterly optimisation reviews ensure the cloud strategy remains aligned with an organisation’s evolving business objectives and takes advantage of new cloud provider capabilities.

Furthermore, proactive management is essential. Automated monitoring systems can continuously scan for cost anomalies and optimisation opportunities, alerting teams to potential issues before they impact the bottom line.  

Just as a gardener keeps a watchful eye for pests and diseases, cloud optimisation requires constant vigilance. As cloud providers continue to evolve and introduce new services, it’s crucial to evaluate and adopt innovations that can further optimise your organisation’s cloud infrastructure and reduce costs.  

By being mindful of the pain points that may be encountered along the way and embracing an ongoing optimisation approach, organisations can ensure their cloud environment remains efficient, cost-effective, and aligned with their ever-evolving business needs.
