OpenAI Releases New Model to Boost Life Sciences

OpenAI has claimed its newly released AI model has increased scientific acumen and biology knowledge as the firm aims to strengthen its position in the life sciences.

The model, dubbed GPT-Rosalind after British scientist Rosalind Franklin most famous for her research into the structure of DNA, aims to help scientists fast track their research workflows to streamline the discovery of pharmaceuticals and innovations in biochemistry and medicine.

The AI model is built for modern scientific work and is designed to help researchers in the early stages of discovery.

According to OpenAI’s own evaluations, it “delivers the best performance on tasks that require reasoning over molecules, proteins, genes, pathways, and disease-relevant biology, and it is more effective at using scientific tools and databases in multi-step workflows such as literature review, sequence-to-function interpretation, experimental planning, and data analysis.”

The model’s foundations are based on OpenAI’s newest AI models while giving researchers the ability to read scientific papers, query databases, use a range of scientific tools, and trial new experiments.

A free Life Science model will now be available to scientists as a Life Sciences research plugin for Codex available on GitHub. The package includes a range of modular skills for common research workflows, from human genetics, genomics, protein structure, biochemistry, clinical evidence, and study discovery.

GPT-Rosalind will be available as a preview in ChatGPT, Codex, and for qualified customers, the API.

The  model will be launched through a trusted-access deployment structure for qualified customers in the US at the start of its rollout, with restrictions on eligibility, access, and governance.

OpenAI says that this is just the first release of its Life Sciences model series as it looks to expand its capabilities in the subject as well as its commitment to accelerating scientific discovery.

The AI firm continues to release specialised AI models for various sectors, released GPT-5.4-Cyber for cybersecurity defenses, as well as ChatGPT Health for medical and health queries.
