Dixons Carphone
Dixons Carphone has revealed that a data breach affected up to nine million more customers than was initially thought.

When Dixons Carphone reacted to a data breach in June, the retailer said that hackers had gained unauthorised data access to the payment details of around 5.9 million customers – with another 1.2 million personal data records also being exposed.

It has since said that it believes around nine million more customers were affected by the breach. However, the company still insists that no sensitive payment or bank account details were stolen.

In a statement, the company said: “While there is now evidence that some of this data may have left our systems, these records do not contain payment card or bank account details and there is no evidence that any fraud has resulted.

“We are continuing to keep the relevant authorities updated.”

Customers Exposed

Dixons Carphone’s latest admission will be sure to further damage consumer confidence in the retailer. Having taken six weeks to confirm the latest stats since the initial revelations, the firm said it believes there had been a number of separate attempts since 2017 to gain access to consumer data.

Chief Executive, Alex Baldock, said the company had taken all necessary precautions to protect customer data and that it was working “around the clock to put it right.”

“Since our data security review uncovered last year’s breach, we’ve been working around the clock to put it right”, he said. “That’s included closing off the unauthorised access, adding new security measures and launching an immediate investigation, which has allowed us to build a fuller understanding of the incident that we’re updating on today.”

Baldock added that the retailer was “disappointed” in having failed to protect consumer data.

He said: “Again, we’re disappointed in having fallen short here, and very sorry for any distress we’ve caused our customers. I want to assure them that we remain fully committed to making their personal data safe with us.”

Dixon’s Carphone shares have taken a hit in the last 12-months, falling 12%. Following this announcement, shares fell an additional 1%.
