Google: Screen Cleaner
For April Fools’ Day, Google claimed to have taken its File app to the next level by enabling the user to clean the actual surface of their screen using their “geometertric dirt models” and “haptic micromovement generator”.
The internet giant claimed that after the screen had been cleaned, Google would use its haptic technology to form a “long-lasting” first shield around the phone.
Furthermore, once the screen is fully cleaned, the Files app will give the screen a pineapple scent. No doubt at this point most people had guessed it was all a jest.
Spotify: Discocover Weekly
The music streaming service pranked its users by tweaking its “Discover Weekly” function. Discover Weekly normally generates playlists for each of its users with new music they might want to listen to, based on their usual music tastes.
As a joke, the company put together a “Discocover Weekly” playlist that consisted mostly of disco covers of non-disco songs, for example, a disco cover of the original Star Trek theme.
Thumbsup: Drone Dog Walker
Thumbsup claimed to have come up with the latest in dog tech, a doggy drone walker. The company’s press release read, “Why pay someone to walk your dog when this Drone Dog Walker can do it for you.
“Featuring a live microphone and camera, so that you can talk to your dog as the drone walks it and Leash Control technology in case your pupper gets carried away.”
On a roll, the company also sent out PR announcing its cat flap with a paw scanner and the Catapoop, a quick and easy way to clean up cat mess…
Tinder: Height Verification Badge
Three days before April Fools, online dating app Tinder teased a new feature known as Height Verification Badge (HBV), which required users to verify their height by taking a photo of themselves standing beside any commercial building.
On its blog, Tinder wrote: “Say goodbye to height fishing. Let’s be real, when it comes to online dating — honesty is the best policy.
“Yes, your height matters as long as every other shallow aspect of physical attraction does. Please try not to take it to heart.”
While some users weren’t sure if this was a joke or not, the app updated its blog on April 1st to confirm it was a just a prank, writing, “Happy April Fool’s Day! While we aren’t really verifying height, we encourage all Tinder users to keep an open mind while on the app.
“Sometimes your most unexpected match can lead to amazing things.”
JBL: Speakers Only Millennials Can Hear
According to the company, its updated PartyBox 300 speakers come with cutting-edge “avocaudio” technology that only under 35s can hear. This one was very far-fetched but too funny not to include on this list.
