The Data Lab is looking for online courses which will contribute to data science training and education in Scotland and across the world.

The Data Lab grants will provide between £30,000 and £50,000 for the development of up to five online courses. The courses must be delivered fully online (no mandatory in-person requirement for learners).

Three different course types will be considered:

• Short online course (i.e. open resources and MOOCs) – Up to £30,000
• Professional online course (i.e. professional training) – Up to £30,000
• Large course (i.e. MSc credit bearing course or MOOC + accompanying paid-for online training course)– Up to £50,000

Submissions are open until 17:00 GMT on Friday 20th October 2017. Both the expression of interest form and guidance documents can be found on the Data Lab website.

In November 2016, the Data Lab called for submissions for online training courses which would provide skills and training on applying innovative data science techniques to Scottish industry, across sectors including agriculture, tourism, medicine and gaming.

The Power of Data Science in the Health and Care Sector

This course is a collaborative project by the University of Strathclyde and UrbanTide, with an advisory team including members from FlyingBinary, NES and DHI.

The Power of Data Science in the Health and Care Industry is an online course which targets health and care practitioners and project and change managers. It aims to demonstrate the value of data, including how and what data should be gathered, data governance and requirements and how the data can be used to inform advent technologies such as precision medicine or stratified healthcare.

Data Science for the Games Industry

An online learning course created as collaboration between the University of Dundee, Outplay, Scottish Games Network, 4J Studios, Ninja Kiwi, Teradata, Big Consultancy and Enterprise Porridge.

This course, targeting gaming industry experts and the gaming-interested alike, aims to teach participant’s how to store and effectively analyse these data goldmines by drawing on Scottish gaming case stories and the technical background.

Data Science in Stratified Healthcare and Precision Medicine

A course created by the University of Edinburgh in collaboration with The Farr Institute, Innovative Healthcare Delivery Programme, NHS/NSS, IBM and Aridhia

Data Science in Stratified Healthcare and Precision Medicine is an online learning course for health and care professionals, undergraduate medical students and NHS staff. It aims to explain the key concepts of data science and data-intensive medicine and explore the opportunities and challenges that come part in parcel with emerging technologies. By drawing on local projects such as Edinburgh Genomics, which has the ability to sequence a whole human genome is just 48 hours, and The Scottish PACS Safe Haven, a repository of medical imaging data, the course will explore the real life applications of these novel techniques.
