Games and gadgets retailer CeX has suffered from a ‘sophisticated’ data breach, with up to 2 million customer’s details stolen by an ‘unauthorised third-party.’

Second-hand games and electronics retailer CeX has warned that the personal details of up to 2 million customers have been compromised in an ‘sophisticated’ data breach. Customer names, phone numbers, passwords, addresses, and emails are amongst the information stolen, as well as old credit card information from before 2009.

A spokesperson for the company said: “We take the protection of customer data extremely seriously and have always had a robust security programme in place which we continually reviewed and updated to meet the latest online threats. Clearly however, additional measures were required to prevent such a sophisticated breach occurring and we have therefore employed a cyber security specialist to review our processes.

“Together we have implemented additional advanced measures of security to prevent this from happening again.”

Affected customers have been sent an email offering guidance, and are being advised to change their password – especially if used on other websites.

CeX has 300 outlets across the UK, with at least 20 stores located in Scotland.
