Scotland Women in Technology

Last month saw Scotland Women in Technology (SWiT) continue its commitment to drive gender equality in Scottish tech with two new appointments.

As part of a new recruitment drive, the charity appointed Samantha Bedford, a digital innovation leader as Chair.

Meanwhile, Vice Chair Marisa Metcalf was appointed to lead and build upon the successes of their predecessors.

SWiT has been a long-standing network in Scotland since its formation in 2008. Under the leadership of the previous Chair, Lynsey Campbell, it became a registered charity in 2019.

With several other very successful initiatives, including awards, events and workshops with multiple sponsors and partners, the charity has continued to grow and strengthen the contributions of women in the tech sector in Scotland.

The SWiT Board extended its thanks to Lynsey Campbell and Elaine McKechnie for their “great leadership over the last three years and for setting strong foundations for SWiT to continue to develop”.

Commenting on the announcement, Bedford said: “I’m inspired to be leading SWiT as we navigate gender equality issues in technology post-COVID, many of which have become even more pronounced. It’s not going to be an easy journey and gender networks have been in existence for many years, but to be able to build on the legacy of SWiT is just fantastic.”

Metcalf, who has been employed in the technology sector in Scotland for more than 20 years, added: “I’m incredibly humbled to take on the role as Vice-Chair at SWiT. Scotland continues to be a thriving environment for technology businesses and startups.

“We have the opportunity to drive change and it is our intention at SWiT, to help to influence the female talent pipeline in tech in Scotland. We want to ensure that women and girls have the opportunity to develop the skills that our country will need to continue with innovation and growth in technology, without bias.”

Dxcover

Dxcover has appointed experienced diagnostics industry professional Dr David Eustace as Operations Director to drive product development, manufacturing, regulatory and laboratory operations.

Dr Eustace’s appointment comes following a period of substantial growth for the Strathclyde University spin out, which is developing blood tests for early detection of cancer.

In 2021, Dxcover has completed its second clinical study, showcasing the clinical utility of the Dxcover Brain Cancer test, and recently moved into new lab and office space in Glasgow’s Innovation District in preparation for further growth.

Dr Eustace joins the team from Bruker Daltonics, the American-owned scientific instruments and diagnostics company, where he worked as Operations Director in Germany and Scotland.

Commenting on the appointment, Dr Eustace said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has heightened the need for quicker and more effective diagnostic tests to help healthcare professionals triage patients effectively and make sure that the best possible care is delivered as quickly as possible.

“Earlier cancer diagnoses result in significantly higher survival rates and the Dxcover team has been making huge steps to translate ground-breaking technology into the clinic to make that possible”.

He added: “I am honoured to be joining such a talented team, dedicated to saving more lives, and look forward to taking the Dxcover® Brain Cancer liquid biopsy through the next level of clinical and regulatory approvals which are required prior to commercial use.”

Dr Mark Hegarty, CEO of Dxcover Limited, commented: “The appointment of David marks a significant step in the growth of the Dxcover business and we are thrilled to attract such a high calibre professional and industry leader to our growing team.

“His track record speaks for itself, and his sector-specific knowledge and experience will be of great value as we accelerate our regulatory and clinical plans.”

Expansions. Awards and Partnerships

e.fundamentals

Last month saw Edinburgh-headquartered Digital Shelf Analytics provider, e.fundamentals, announce plans to create 12 highly-skilled tech jobs to fuel its global expansion.

The move follows a rapid growth period over the last 12 months where the software company’s revenue grow by more than 300% as world-leading consumer goods brands such as PepsiCo, Mars and Arla have integrated e.fundamentals’ Digital Shelf Analytics platform.

The new roles will grow e.fundamentals’ international tech workforce by almost 30% and will include product managers and senior engineers. The team expansion is aimed at supporting global clients and accelerating the rate of innovation across the entire product portfolio.

Greg Urquhart, e.fundamentals’ Chief Technology Officer, said: “We’re incredibly excited about the growth opportunities that have evolved recently in ecommerce grocery.

“Edinburgh is one of Britain’s fastest-growing tech hubs and most vibrant cities to recruit for technical expertise. We’ve been delighted to have attracted exceptional local engineering talent across all levels of experience. While we’re recruiting globally, our core team will remain located in Edinburgh.”

John Maltman, CEO of e.fundamentals, added: “We continue to be highly impressed with the quality of tech talent in Scotland.

“Increasing our engineering team signals not only our dedicated effort to support Edinburgh’s aspiration for becoming a centre for tech excellence, but also our company’s own high-growth ambitions furthering our position as a leading Digital Shelf Analytics provider.”

AutoRek

Scottish fintech company, AutoRek, has been recognised at the Systems in the City Financial Technology Awards 2021 in both the ‘Best CASS Solution’ and ‘Best Wealth Management Solution’ categories.

The firm also secured the the accolade ‘Best CASS Solution’ for the second consecutive year.

Lyn Canavan, Head of Marketing at AutoRek, commented: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious award and to be recognised again as a provider of the ‘Best CASS Solution’ by the Systems in the City Financial Technology Awards judging panel. Based on an independent and factual annual accreditation process, the selection process is overseen by three independent judges.

The Awards provide an important point of reference for user firms assessing the suitability of their operational infrastructure.

Dxcover

ClinSpec Diagnostics, the Glasgow-based developer of liquid biopsies for the early detection of cancer, has relaunched as Dxcover Limited, as it targets growth.

A spin-out from the University of Strathclyde, Dxcover aims to be a world leader in liquid biopsy and artificial intelligence for early detection of cancer and other diseases. Since spinout in 2019, the company has raised £5.1m in funding to date to progress its multi-cancer development programme, now rebranded as the Dxcover Cancer Project.

Following a period of growth and after reaching its round two funding target earlier this year, Dxcover is moving to new premises. It has taken on a 2000 sq ft lab and office space in the University’s Royal College Building in the heart of the Glasgow City Innovation District, home to many of the city’s fastest growing tech and science businesses.

At three times the size of Dxcover’s previous labs, the new site will accommodate the company’s ongoing growth, but will also permit its critical development work to continue while social distancing measures remain in place.

Dxcover CEO Mark Hegarty said: “This has already been a ground-breaking year for the company. We completed our Round 2 investment of £3.5m in February, moved into our new lab and offices, and now, with a very firm focus on future growth, we have rebranded as Dxcover.

“The new name with tagline The Future of Cancer Diagnostics, is both aspirational and a statement of our intent to help doctors discover cancer earlier with our liquid biopsy technology.”

Worldwide, 26,000 people die from cancer each day. The Covid-19 pandemic, and increased waiting times for cancer diagnosis and treatment has emphasised the need for new technologies which are simpler, faster and more cost-effective.

Dr Matthew J Baker, Chief Technology Officer at Dxcover and inventor of the spectroscopic liquid biopsy technology, said: “Over the course of the pandemic, we have been determined to safely continue with our lab and clinical work as much as possible. We’ve achieved that through a combination of working from home and being on site part time, but to continue to develop our multi-cancer platform, it’s important that we have the space to grow and maximise lab time.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has really shone a light on healthcare and the need for quick, effective diagnostic solutions. The new lab and office space will help us to maintain the momentum in the development of our Dxcover® Brain Cancer and Dxcover® Cancer projects.”

Topolytics

Edinburgh-based waste management tech firm Topolytics has been recognised as one of the five winners in the Circular Innovation City Challenge out of 200 entrants.

Topolytics has been hailed for “modernising global waste management,” by helping producers to understand how much waste they generate by type, what happens to the waste, and its associated carbon impact.

Its WasteMap software, a waste data analytics platform which uses machine learning to make the world’s waste more visible and verifiable, is used by producers, processors, investors, and regulators around the world to generate better environmental and commercial outcomes.

Commenting on his firm’s recognition, Topolytics founder Mike Groves said: “The radical changes needed will not come without better use of data and insights on the materials and products we use, new circular business models, and new ways of engaging all city communities.

“Emerging technologies and digital solutions are key to accelerate this transition. When waste is generated in location, and then moved to another for sale, recycling or manufacturing, for example, this complex geography needs to be made visible and accessible so it can be analysed leading to better decision-making.

“WasteMap enables this to happen, and helps with better analysis for the waste industry, to drive new business models, smarter infrastructure and greater transparency.”
