WhatsApp has gone down amid reports that users can’t send or receive messages.

Issues are believed to have began at around 8am (BST) on Tuesday morning, with users in the UK, Europe and worldwide reporting problems with the app.

Within the space of an hour, more than 12,000 reports were filed with web monitoring service, DownDetector.

Users also took to social media to complain about the service failure, with thousands of posts on Twitter using the hashtag #whatsappdown.

While users reported they still had access to conversations, many claimed that they cannot send or receive any new messages.

Users were also met with a message at the top of a chat page saying the app was “connecting”.

WhatsApp has millions of users in the UK, and boasts more than two billion users globally.

The app’s parent company, Meta, confirmed it is aware of the issue and is working on a fix.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the social media giant said: “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we’re working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible.”
