Applications are now open for the first CodeBase cohort of Edinburgh Greentech Futures, which will provide a space and community for businesses and entrepreneurs interested in developing green technology.

The group-based programme is aimed at established businesses, startups, and emerging entrepreneurs alike, and is appropriate for those at the idea stage, to those with businesses looking to incorporate greener technology into their company.

Edinburgh Greentech Futures is a collaborative project between Codebase, The City of Edinburgh Council,  and the UK Government via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The programme is for anyone over the age of 18 with a greentech idea, but what does greentech even mean?

To CodeBase, greentech has a broad definition “We define greentech as the development of technology to support sustainability, conservation of the environment, carbon reduction, adaptation, renewable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, and responsible production and consumption,” the programme explained.

The programme consists of two main parts: learning time, which takes place online or in-person, and creative time, which is in person only.

During learning time, cohort members will be taught about sustainable product making, sustainability by design, carbon taxes, product building, as well as stakeholder and customer needs.

Creative time leans heavily on the established community, and will include time for “hackathons” where the group can learn more about Edinburgh’s specific climate-change issues, like wildlife interactions and seasonal interruptions, surface water fluctuations, and changes in the natural environment resulting from seasonal variations.

The learning is geared towards digital software products, but CodeBase has said the same lessons can apply to physical products as well.

The programme is set to provide cohort members with a framework of what needs to be done to create a sustainable product and business centred around some of the most important climate issues affecting the local area.

Learning time will be fortnightly from 10:30am and 2pm, starting on 12 October. Creative time is once a month from 6pm to 8:30pm, with the first session on 23 November.
