In anticipation of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) introducing a regulatory framework for heat networks, techUK has released a comprehensive report exploring the viability of utilising data centre heat for district heating networks across the country.
The report, named “Warming Up to Efficiency: Understanding the Potential Benefits and Pitfalls of Data Centre Heat Export in the UK,” emphasises the significant promise data centre heat export holds, particularly concerning sustainability and corporate social responsibility objectives.
“This new report showcases best practices and offers practical guidance for developing and implementing data centre heat export while not shying away from the barriers that are preventing widespread adoption,” said Craig Melson, associate director for climate, environment and sustainability at techUK.
By redirecting surplus residual heat to local heat networks, data centres can contribute to a circular economy model, optimising resource utilisation and addressing fuel poverty by offering cost-effective heating to communities.
Data centres consume vast amounts of energy to operate, and account for 3% of global carbon emissions, even more than aviation. This leads to an estimated 4.51GW of waste heat each year, according to ICIBSE Journal.
“Residual heat energy reuse isn’t just efficient from a circular energy perspective — where appropriate, it’s a way for data centres to give back to the communities where they operate, creating a sustainable cycle of energy and goodwill,” said Dave Smith, director, sustainability and operational Risk Digital Realty
“As the backbone of our digital economy, data centres have the potential to play a crucial role in securing a greener future for all.”

However, the report also acknowledges practical challenges that must be addressed for effective and sustainable integration, including seasonal variations, infrastructure considerations, occupancy levels, emerging technologies, and potential sustainability concerns.
“If government initiatives in this area can strike the right balance, reusing data centre heat could be a real sustainability success story,” said Allan Kaye, co-founder and managing director at Vesper Technologies.
“As adoption of artificial intelligence continues to accelerate, the data centre infrastructure needed to train and run AI models will only increase in scale and emissions impact. Meeting the massive compute demands of AI while staying within environmental limits will take innovative energy and heat management solutions,” Kaye concluded.
