The Home Office has proposed automated redaction technology for UK police forces.

The suggestion comes amid the ongoing efforts to bolster data protection measures within the UK’s law enforcement sector.

The new plan to introduce AI-powered automated redaction technology to police forces will look to streamline the process for digital media, audio, and video files used in criminal investigations while safeguarding sensitive information.

To expedite the process, the Home Office has allocated resources to the Accelerated Capability Environment (ACE), a unit dedicated to addressing digital and data-related challenges within the Homeland Security Group.

Collaborating with a business analyst, ACE explored existing tools on the market and evaluated software and techniques employed by individual police forces, utilising synthetic data from Surrey Police for testing purposes.

The Home Office is now leveraging ACE’s reports to determine the next steps for the deployment of AI-powered automated redaction tools nationwide.

It comes on the heels of chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s Spring Budget allocation of over £230 million to UK policing, earmarked for the implementation of time-saving technologies.

These include automated redaction of personal information captured on security cameras, video interviews of witnesses and victims, piloting drone usage as first responders in traffic accidents, and leveraging AI to triage calls to the police’s non-emergency number 101.

Additionally, the government plans to establish a Centre for Police Productivity to support the effective utilisation of data and AI by police forces.

The proposal for automated redaction technology follows a broader trend of increasing reliance on digital solutions within UK policing.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) recently faced scrutiny over plans to expand the use of facial recognition technology, highlighting a broader push from government and law enforcement bodies to leverage technological advancements in policing practices.
