Greater support needed for households transitioning to green energy, according to new research. 

A new study from Cardiff University sheds light on the challenges facing households as they navigate the transition to green energy sources, urging financial assistance and guidance. 

The report, published in Nature Energy looks into householder perceptions regarding various low carbon heating technologies, including heat pumps, hydrogen, hybrid heating, and heat networks. 

With the UK aiming to phase out new gas boiler installations by 2050 to meet climate change targets, the study highlights the need for substantial grants and incentives to aid households in adopting sustainable heating solutions. 

Drawing on data from deliberative workshops across diverse geographic and housing contexts, the research identifies concerns about the financial implications and logistical challenges of retrofitting homes with green energy technologies. 

Participants expressed worries about affordability, uncertain cost estimates, and the potential impact on their finances.

Notably, tenants in the private rental sector voiced concerns about potential rent and bill increases, while homeowners in affluent areas were more willing to contribute to retrofitting costs. The study underscores the importance of addressing these financial concerns to ensure widespread adoption of low carbon heating technologies.

“It’s clear from our research that while the public is supportive of the need to transition away from fossil fuels, they do not expect to bear these intellectual and financial burdens alone. Current financial incentives will therefore not be enough to increase uptake,” said Dr. Gareth Thomas, from Cardiff University’s School of Social Sciences.

“Householders feel that selecting between low carbon heating ought not to be a risky process that leaves some households worse-off, victims of questionable tradesmen or opaque energy or appliance markets.

The study also highlights regional variations in attitudes towards heating infrastructure and disruptions, emphasising the importance of considering local contexts in policymaking. For instance, focus groups in Liverpool were receptive to district heating schemes, reflecting their sense of local solidarity and collective identity.

“There are many factors which can make people feel insecure or conversely, less worried about moving to green energy sources,” continued Thomas.

“For those with secure housing and a financial cushion to fall back on, heat retrofit may appear more akin to an inconvenience than a fundamental disruption to valued ways of life. While recognising the material disruptions such changes may entail, participants discussing heat decarbonisation from a position of security were able to articulate positive benefits for themselves, the environment and their community.

“Our findings indicate that policymaking should give less emphasis to the decision making of individual consumers, and establish ways of supporting citizens financially, intellectually and emotionally so they can live well while engaging in heat retrofit and other low-carbon lifestyle projects.”
