Amazon has begun a major recruitment drive that will see more than 1,000 apprentices hired across Britain.

According to Amazon, the apprenticeship scheme will create jobs across a range of areas, including IT, creative design, robotics and software engineering. Apprenticeships at the company will last between 14 months and four years and provide practical training.

New apprentices can expect a minimum pay of around £9.70 an hour, with London rates of £10.80. Amazon added that successful candidates will receive a raft of additional benefits, including health care and staff discounts.

Successful candidates will be located at sites across the UK, Amazon revealed.

The company has a number of fulfilment centres and delivery stations littered throughout the country, as well as development centres in Edinburgh, London and Cambridge.

Commenting on the apprenticeship recruitment drive, Amazon UK Country Manager, Jake Boumphrey, said: “We are proud to be creating new opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds across the UK to gain skills through our apprenticeship programmes in 25 different fields, from logistics to robotics.”

Amazon currently employs 40,000 workers across Britain and hired 10,000 across the UK last year alone.

The trillion-dollar-valued company has benefited hugely from the coronavirus pandemic. It recently announced that its annual UK sales had increased by 51% to a whopping £19.4 billion.

Earlier this week, Amazon also revealed chief executive Jeff Bezos will step down. The tech mogul will take up the position of executive chairman at the firm while Andy Jassy, the current head of Amazon Web Services, will step into the vacant position.
