Anthropic has reportedly agreed a $35 billion computing deal with Nvidia-backed cloud provider Lambda, as the AI company continues to significantly expand the infrastructure supporting its models and Claude chatbot.

The agreement will involve a data centre being developed by infrastructure company Hut 8 in Nueces County, Texas, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private.

The Wall Street Journal previously reported on the agreement and said Nvidia would hold the lease on the Texas facility.

The deal represents the latest major AI computing agreement involving Nvidia, which is the world’s most valuable business and the leading provider of chips used for artificial intelligence workloads.

Nvidia has increasingly used its financial resources to expand access to computing infrastructure, a strategy which could in turn increase demand for its technology as companies race to secure the processing capacity required to develop and operate increasingly advanced AI systems.

Anthropic, meanwhile, has emerged as one of the technology sector’s largest customers for data centre capacity.

The Claude developer agreed last week to spend $45bn renting computing capacity from Nscale in West Virginia. In recent months, it has also signed a $50bn cloud deal with neocloud provider Fluidstack and a separate $45bn agreement with Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

The scale of the agreements highlights the substantial infrastructure requirements associated with developing and operating large AI models, with Anthropic committing tens of billions of dollars across several different providers as it expands its available computing capacity.

A representative for Anthropic declined to comment on the reported Lambda agreement, while Nvidia, Lambda and Hut 8 did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The deal also comes as Lambda seeks additional funding to support its own expansion.

The company is reportedly in talks to raise as much as $3bn and has discussed a valuation of $12bn or more, according to people familiar with the discussions.

Lambda previously raised more than $1.5bn in a funding round in November.

The cloud provider also reached an agreement with Microsoft last year to deploy AI infrastructure powered by tens of thousands of Nvidia processors, further positioning the company as a supplier of large-scale computing resources for the growing AI industry.

The latest agreement with Anthropic would add another major AI company to Lambda’s infrastructure commitments while further strengthening the network of computing agreements connected to Nvidia’s hardware.
