Apple is introducing age checks to its devices in the UK, requiring users to verify they are over 18 to access certain adult-only apps and services.

The new age verification mandate will affect iPhones and iPads updated to the latest iOS 26.4 software, which will ask users to confirm their age via an ID or credit card check.

If customers do not confirm their age, they will automatically have web filters turned on on their device.

The age check notification following an update will read: “UK law requires you to confirm you are an adult to change content restrictions.”

The tech giant will also be able to confirm age based on information it already holds from a user, such as their credit card information on file, or based on how long a user has already held their account.

Those under the age of 13 will not be able to create an Apple account without the involvement of a guardian.

Ofcom has welcomed the changes, and worked closely with Apple as well as other service providers on age check rules.

Under the Online Safety Act, platforms that offer adult content must have robust age checks in place, but do not require any device level age checks.

The age verification methods required by platforms range from credit card checks, ID scans, and facial recognition technology with age estimations that may use AI.

While age check requirements have been met positively by child protection advocates, many are concerned that they can be easily bypassed through the use of VPNs.

Further, security experts have expressed concerns that certain platforms may be ill-equipped to safely and securely process and house such sensitive information such as photo IDs and credit card information.

The device level age checks appear to not apply to Apple computers, and it remains to be seen if the roll out will extend to these as well as other Apple devices.
