Edinburgh-based mobile app and API security company Approov has closed a £5 million Series A funding round, with backing from Maven Capital Partners, Souter Investments, and existing investors Lanza techVentures and Scottish Enterprise.
The investment includes a £1.2 million commitment from the Investment Fund for Scotland, managed by Maven, and is intended to support Approov’s mission to redefine mobile security for the AI era.
The company’s unpatented mobile attestation technology offers a cloud-first alternative to traditional code obfuscation, protecting mobile apps and APIs from tampering and fraudulent access – especially in the face of increasingly agentic AI-powered threats.
“This funding marks a pivotal moment in our mission to ensure that every mobile app instance is authenticated and that backend APIs are protected from fraud, abuse, and unauthorised access,” said Ted Miracco, CEO of Approov.
“As the threat landscape continues to evolve, developers and enterprises alike are recognising that mobile app security cannot be an afterthought.”
With this investment, Approov – recent winner at the Scottish Cyber Awards – plans to bolster its research and development team in Edinburgh, expand its sales and marketing operations, and extend its reach across new sectors and international markets. The company already counts major global players in healthcare, fintech, connected vehicles, and e-commerce among its customers.
Approov’s technology is capable of real-time app attestation and API runtime protection, defending against exploits from emulators, rooted devices, tampering tools, and bots used in credential stuffing attacks.
“This investment validates Approov’s vision of a safer mobile app ecosystem,” said Miracco. “With increasing cyber risks driven by AI, Approov solutions provide the robust, scalable security mobile developers need to protect their applications and API communications.”
The timing of the raise is significant, aligning with shifts in global digital regulation. The EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the UK’s DMCC Bill are reshaping mobile app ecosystems by opening competition beyond the Apple and Google duopoly.
“As mobile ecosystems face AI-driven threats and new regulations like the EU Digital Markets Act and UK consumer laws, the need for strong, independent app and API security is urgent,” said Dr. Edward Amoroso, CEO of TAG Infosphere and former Chief Information Security Officer at AT&T.
“Approov delivers essential trust across fragmented platforms, including non-GMS Android and HarmonyOS.”
According to Craig McGill, Investment Manager at Maven Capital Partners, Approov’s strong intellectual property portfolio was a key driver in the deal.
“Approov is a leading innovator in mobile app and API security with proven applications in multiple target sectors,” McGill said. “With their strong IP and the growing demand for API-level defences across the industry, the business is uniquely positioned to lead this next era of mobile security.”
Approov recently won the Cyber Innovation Award at the Scottish Cyber Awards, further underlining its position as a leader in securing digital infrastructure.
