A host of tech companies will use artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle the climate crisis with Scottish Government funding.

The six companies, which include Edinburgh-based firms, Topolytics and Space Intelligence, will receive £170,000 to create AI-enabled tech through the Can Do Innovation Challenge Fund.

Some of the projects awarded funding will see AI used to develop more efficient food supply chains, a waste and resources map to highlight recycling opportunities and AI-based thermal imaging services to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Each of the six companies will work over a 10-week period to develop their initial concepts, with up to three applicants progressing to phase 2 where they will produce minimum viable products.

Four Glasgow-based companies will also benefit from the funding boost. These include Arceptive, Trade in Space, IES – Integrated Environmental Solutions and ISC – Industrial Systems and Control.

Commenting on the announcement, digital economy minister Kate Forbes said: “Scotland was one of the first countries in the world to acknowledge that we are facing a global climate emergency and we will do everything we can to make a difference.

“Our commitment to meeting ambitious emissions targets makes it vital that we develop new technologies – including harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence.

Forbes added: “Scotland has a proud tradition as a leader in technical innovation and is home to a huge array of companies pushing the boundaries of what is possible. I am excited to see what they produce with the support of this fund.”

The Scottish Government declared a “climate emergency” in April last year, which First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said represented a promise to act on growing concerns over global warming.

Speaking at the time, she said Scotland aimed to “lead by example” and cut carbon emissions in the wake of global protests.

Managed by Scottish Enterprise, the national fund supports organisations to develop tech solutions for public sector service and policy delivery challenges.
