In a significant leap forward in training methodology, the Royal Navy has incorporated VR tech into its sailor training programs, aimed at helping them prepare for the complexities of real operations. 

HMS Collingwood, the Navy’s warfare school based in Fareham, has spearheaded this initiative by installing nine state-of-the-art VR simulators at various locations across the UK. These simulators precisely replicate the bridge of modern-day warships and simulate maritime environments, including waters and harbors where sailors are expected to operate.

Lieutenant Commander Gavin Lowe, who oversees the Navigational Training Unit, hailed the adoption of VR technology as a “game changer” for training future navigators when speaking with the BBC. 

Having witnessed the evolution of training technology over his tenure, Lt Cdr Lowe expressed that the new VR simulators represent a substantial advancement, providing an unprecedented level of realism and immersion for trainees.

The installation of these VR simulators comes after a £27 million investment jointly made by Team Fisher and Metaverse VR. 

HMS Collingwood serves as the primary hub for this training technology, with five simulators, including two large full-mission simulators equipped with wrap-around digital displays and VR headsets.

Additionally, Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth and a new naval facility in Faslane, Scotland, have each received two simulators, further expanding access to this innovative training platform.

Lt Lauren Webber, an instructor at HMS Collingwood, noted the transformative impact of VR training when speaking to the BBC, enabling faster and more effective skill development among students: “We’ve been able to get training out quicker, faster and better, allowing students to have more time in these simulators to better practice anything they would do in the real world when they get out there,” 

The incorporation of VR technology into sailor training underscores the Royal Navy’s commitment to leveraging innovations to enhance operational readiness and ensure the effectiveness of its maritime personnel in increasingly complex environments. 

With VR simulators poised to become integral to naval training programs, sailors will become better equipped than ever to navigate the challenges of modern warfare with precision and confidence.
