Following revelations this week that Cloudflare blocked what could be one of the largest DDoS attacks ever recorded, the platform appears to be down across several websites this morning.

Cloudflare faced another outage just weeks following a major disruption that disabled several of the world’s major platforms.

The network and security platform underpinning the safety features of a swath of websites large and small appeared to be down across various websites

DownDetector, the internet and website outage tracker, had also been taken out due to Cloudflare’s outage. Following fixes to the issue, the outage website had around 3,000 people report issues with Cloudflare at around 9:04, minutes before Cloudflare announced it had issued a fix for the problem.

Users trying to access that platform or others that rely on Cloudflare were met this morning with a 500 Internal Server Error, with Cloudflare printed underneath the error message.

Cloudflare did issue a status update at 8:56 am, saying that it is “investigating issues with Cloudflare Dashboard and related APIs.

“Customers using the Dashboard / Cloudflare APIs are impacted as requests might fail and/or errors may be displayed.”

An update at 9:09 am says the firm is still investigating the issue.

Following this, Cloudflare says a fix had been issued and it is monitoring results.

Cloudflare’s previous outage, which took place less than a month ago, was caused by “an overly large configuration file used to manage threat traffic, which triggered a crash in Cloudflare’s software systems” according to the Financial Times.

Its current status page says there was scheduled maintenance for two of its data centres – one in Chicago and one in Detroit. Cloudflare warned that critical national infrastructure relying on Cloudflare’s services from these data centres may face disruptions or increased latency issues.

This is a developing story.
