The revelation comes from a report by ISC2, which unveils a prevailing sentiment among cybersecurity professionals regarding the positive impact of artificial intelligence on their jobs.Â
According to the report, 82% of respondents believe that AI will enhance job efficiency for cybersecurity professionals. In addition, 88% anticipate significant AI-driven changes in their roles within the next couple of years, with 35% already experiencing such transformations.
Despite this, over half (56%) of those surveyed acknowledged that AI may render some aspects of their jobs obsolete.Â
Furthermore, while 60% of cybersecurity professionals express confidence in leading the adoption of AI within their organisations, a quarter admit to being unprepared to address AI-driven security issues. Moreover, a considerable percentage (41%) lack experience in AI or ML, highlighting the need for enhanced training and awareness.
According to ISC2 the report underscores the urgent need for organisations to prioritise AI governance, regulatory compliance, and workforce training to effectively harness the potential of AI while mitigating associated risks in the cybersecurity landscape.
ISC2 also emphasised that the integration of AI into cybersecurity operations could address the industry’s pressing workforce gap, estimated at four million individuals globally. Specifically, AI and machine learning (ML) technologies are anticipated to streamline repetitive tasks and allow professionals to focus on more critical responsibilities.

However, alongside the potential benefits, cybersecurity experts highlight the escalating threats posed by AI. A notable 54% of respondents reported a substantial increase in cyber-threats over the past six months, with 13% attributing this surge directly to AI-generated threats. The most concerning AI-based threats identified include deepfakes, disinformation campaigns, social engineering, adversarial attacks, IP theft, and unauthorised access.
Moreover, there is a growing concern regarding the regulation and ethical use of AI in cybersecurity. A significant majority (80%) of respondents advocate for comprehensive regulations governing the safe and ethical application of AI technologies.
Despite the recognition of AI’s potential, the report reveals significant gaps in organisational policies and preparedness. Only a fraction of organisations have formal policies addressing the safe and ethical use of AI (27%) and securing AI technology (15%). However, discussions around formulating such policies are underway in many organisations.
