The University of Edinburgh has announced a partnership with global technology solutions firm Leidos in an effort to drive advancements in AI and data science.

The strategic partnership is set to leverage the work of the university’s Bayes Centre, an innovation hub for data science and AI, to address critical challenges in areas such as healthcare, national security, the environment, and public services.

Leidos said that the partnership underscores the firm’s commitment to build AI that delivers high-quality outcomes while scaling efficiently, with plans to combine Edinburgh University’s cutting edge research with its own ‘Trusted Mission AI’ solutions. 

Most recently, those solutions have included incorporating AI and machine learning into airport x-ray passenger screening systems, using genAI to develop an IT support platform, and, perhaps most controversially, finding ways to deploy machine learning for military use.

Notably, the tech firm is already a partner to both the UK and Scottish Governments, employing more than 1,200 people in the UK to work on digital transformation projects for the Home Office, MOD, and Metropolitan Police.

Leidos said that the firm’s latest collaboration with the University of Edinburgh will drive innovation, improve operational efficiency, and deliver trustworthy AI, most likely following the company’s Framework for AI Resilience and Security, a customisable approach based around addressing AI vulnerabilities and embracing regulation.

Ron Keesing, chief AI officer at Leidos, said, “Our University Alliance Program connects Leidos with communities of innovation at top universities, and we are excited to welcome the University of Edinburgh to our global network.”

The collaboration will also focus on generating positive social impact, allowing Leidos to engage with the university’s talent pool through internships and joint projects, with hopes to attract new talent and further AI innovation.

Around 500 students and academics are currently based at the Bayes Centre, Edinburgh’s flagship innovation hub for Data Science and AI, which has gained a strong reputation for its tech accelerator and startup incubator programs, including its AI Accelerator initiative, which has supported Scottish firms across sectors from the space industry to environmental conservation.

The Bayes Centre has also routinely partnered with tech firms, most recently Net AI, a network intelligence company, and Peacock Technology, an innovator in agricultural automation.
