Goldman Sachs Marcus to launch soon

The Wall Street bank is set to expand for the first time outside US with a digital-only brand called Marcus.

Goldman Sachs is set to enter the UK’s retail banking sector and ruffle a few fintech feathers with a market leading rate for savers when the Wall Street lender formally launches its Marcus brand next month.

The US banking giant opened the easy access digital savings account to its UK-based employees on Thursday, ahead of a countrywide roll out planned “in the coming weeks” according to an internal memo acquired by Reuters.

“The launch of Marcus by Goldman Sachs in the UK represents an important milestone in the growth of Goldman Sachs’ consumer business, as well as continued diversification of the firm’s funding,” the memo said.

“Our initial offering aligns to one of Marcus’ core tenets, offering transparent, simple and easy-to-use products that provide value. We look forward to building new relationships and meeting the savings needs of UK customers.”

Four months ago, it snapped up personal finance app Clarity Money to help create its mobile shop front. Marcus is hoping to mix the banking might of Goldman Sachs with the agility of a digital-only fintech. The bank will apparently seek to offer an online savings account to customers in the UK, the memo stated, and forms part of the bank’s strategy to grow its consumer business.

The move pits the U.S. investment banking giant against the traditional financial institutional landscape as well as positioning itself to take on newcomers like Monzo and Starling.

The Press Association reported last month that Sachs had hired 150 extra staff in London in preparation for the UK-wide rollout, and included 100 management, IT and product development workers as well as 50 people for its customer service call centre.

Since its launch in the United States in 2016 the digital bank has accumulated more than $20 billion in deposits. The Marcus brand – named after co-founder Marcus Goldman – will offer a high yield savings rate, above the national average in the UK.
