Google has claimed a quantum breakthrough after creating an algorithm 13,000 times faster than those used by even the most powerful classical supercomputers, paving the way for the first real-world quantum applications.
Powered by its 105-qubit Willow chip, Google said that the new algorithm, dubbed Quantum Echoes, marks a historic first – producing a verifiable, repeatable result that surpasses classical computation.
Using a new ‘molecular ruler’ technique, Google researchers sent a signal through the Willow quantum system, nudging one particle, then reversed the process to listen for the ‘echo’.
Because the quantum waves reinforce each other, this echo comes back louder, clearer, and incredibly accurate, allowing ultra-precise measurements, which Google used to map out the structure of a molecule.
As if that wasn’t enough, Google claims that its system can perform millions of these precise Quantum Echoes measurements in just tens of seconds, adding up to a truly staggering one trillion measurements over the course of the project.
The team behind the milestone, which includes 2025 Nobel Prize winner Michel Devoret, said it could form the basis for scalable verification, bringing ‘everyday’ uses for quantum computers closer to reality in everything from drug discovery to materials science and more powerful AI models.
Even more exciting, the breakthrough could have a huge impact on our understanding of the universe.
Coupling fantastic speeds with unbelievable precision, Google said that the Quantum Echoes algorithm could be the first step to unlocking ‘new, unseen worlds’, revealing previously unobservable natural phenomena, like the interactions between atoms and particles. For now, though, those applications are still firmly in the realm of sci-fi.
“As we march toward our next milestone — a long-lived logical qubit — we are fully aware of the numerous challenges ahead,” said Google.
“Reaching our ultimate goal will require orders-of-magnitude improvement in system performance and scale, with millions of components to be developed and matured.”

Despite quantum research still being in its infancy, tech firms are in a hot race to make these kinds of breakthroughs.
Within the last year, both Google and Microsoft unveiled new quantum chip designs, with both companies, alongside the likes of IBM and Quantinuum, making strides in quantum error correction over recent years, and all looking to build dedicated quantum machines.
Added to that, Cisco recently unveiled its own ‘breakthrough’ with its distributed quantum computing network, and even HSBC has climbed aboard the quantum gravy train.
