Google has announced it is cutting around 12,000 jobs globally in the latest phase of tech layoffs.

The news is just the latest addition to major cuts across giant tech conglomerates, with Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta reducing their workforces by the thousands globally.

Employees in the US have already been notified if their contracts have been terminated, with those in other countries waiting to hear if their job is secure.

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, CEO Sundar Pichai cited the dramatic growth the company had seen which resulted in their hires, and the resulting difficult decisions they had to make to reflect the current economy and market reality.

Pichai cited Google’s “early investments in AI” which provided them with huge opportunity.

The emphasis on AI was followed by what Pichai described as “a rigorous review” of Google’s many functions and products to determine what employees will stay and which will go.

It is unsurprising that Google has placed importance on AI as Microsoft looks to acquire OpenAI after their launch of ChatGPT. Google is likely to come out with their own advanced AI chatbot to level out the competition.

Currently, it is unclear what UK jobs will be effected and in what departments.

Tech layoffs have previously left many workers in complete jeopardy as their right to live in the UK was entirely dependent on their work visas and job security.

Google insists that it will provide their ex-employees with the proper support according to their country’s policies.
