Requests for users data have spiked

Both Google and Apple conceded ‘some’ data in the majority of cases.

Tech giants Google and Apple have detailed in two separate reports that official requests for users’ data reached high points in the first half of 2017. Both reports break down the number of requests by timeframe and country.

Google’s ‘Transparency Report’ notes that the governments and lawful bodies made 3,239 requests for UK users’ data between January and June this year. Worldwide, Google received 48,941 requests for data in the same timeframe.

Meanwhile, Apple’s report shows that official agencies made 270 requests to access UK-based iTunes and iCloud accounts, and 3,020 requests worldwide.

On the same page, Apple also notes that these accounts can contain a plethora of private information, including personal data, stored photos, email addresses, contacts and calendars. The number of requests relating to US accounts is considerably higher, at 1,692 for the same time period.

Both companies conceded ‘some’ data to agencies in the majority of cases. Google reports that 71% of requests for UK users’ data made in the first half of 2017 were met with the release of some user information. On the other hand, Apple was considerably more compliant, relinquishing data in 78% of UK-based requests and conceding in 80% of cases worldwide.
