In the green tech takeover, saving money appears to be the main motivation among UK consumers switching to green technology, rather than environmental concerns.
This is according to Eco Expert’s 2024 National Home Energy Survey, which asked 2,184 UK adults about their motivations for adopting sustainable technology.
According to the research, the UK population is making more green tech purchases, with solar panel purchases having risen by 13 percentage points year-on-year, while heat pump purchases rose by 5%.
Respondents were more likely to purchase green tech due to their own financial worries rather than for environmental concerns.
Energy bill saving was the number one reason, cited by over half (51%) of all adults.
In contrast, just 15% of adults purchase green tech because of concern for the environment, while 18% have done so due to government incentives.
Graham Hendra, a UK homeowner from Southampton, told The Eco Experts that his reason for adopting low carbon tech in the home is because he “wants to save on monthly bills” and “doesn’t like giving energy companies loads of money.”
Mr Hendra added that “My electricity bill is quite high so I want to reduce that and not buy as much from the National Grid. The carbon offset is a bonus.”

Christopher McFadden, The Eco Expert’s energy expert, said: “In a world that is becoming increasingly more unstable, it is more important than ever to become as energy independent as possible.
“Renewable energy systems, whether traditional, like solar panels and wind turbines, or more up-and-coming, like micro-CHP, are a great way to cut your reliance on fossil fuels.
“You should think of it like investing. If it saves you money now and in the future, stops you from worrying about rising energy costs, and adds value to your home, that can’t be a bad thing, can it?”
