NHS competition
NHS Ayrshire & Arran launch new innovation competition in collaboration with InnoScot Health open to all NHS staff members, looking for innovative ideas to improve patient care.

Regardless of role or department, NHS employees are encouraged to submit ideas. They can address issues as simple or as complex as the employee likes, what’s important is that they are tangible solutions to real-life issues in the NHS system

The competition opened on August 28th and is calling for ideas that align with the vision “caring for Ayrshire,” which promotes local care, self-management, early interventions, and collaboration with local community services. It is run by InnoScot, which works in partnership with NHS Scotland to improve patient care through innovations.

“We are proud to promote and support this InnoScot Health initiative which encourages our staff to think about innovation. We look forward to seeing how staff express their ideas about how our health and care system could be improved upon,” said Karen Bell, head of research at NHS Ayrshire & Arran.

“They know better than anyone where innovative changes could help deliver better outcomes for our community and what these products or services need to look like. We look forward to assessing the ideas that come from our talented, knowledgeable staff and wish them luck with their submissions,” she continued.

“It’s important to remember that fresh ideas come in many forms – they don’t have to be complex, they just have to make a difference.”

Participants should submit a description of what they plan to tackle by visiting the competition website. The NHS hopes the competition will stimulate innovative thinking and progressive problem

As an incentive to participate, the first 100 applicants will receive a gift voucher, and the three finalists will receive prizes ranging from a new Apple iPad to DAB radios.

Looking to staff to innovate service to patients is not a new concept in the NHS. In July, clinical and non-clinical staff were encouraged to pursue entrepreneurial ideas within their field as part of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme (CEP).
