Thousands of users have been affected by the issue this afternoon.

Instagram users worldwide are reporting difficulties with the social media app amidst concerns of a serious glitch.

Users of the platform have taken to alternative social media sites such as Twitter to share that their account has been mistakenly disabled or suspended.

Affected users explained that upon opening the app they were met with a notice informing them that their Instagram account had been suspended. However, while trying to contest the decision, many have been met with an error message or a frozen page.

Some users took to Twitter to clarify whether their accounts had been singled out by the social media site. But it quickly became apparent that the platform was experiencing issues.

One user said: “Well my Instagram was disabled for literally no reason this morning, does anyone know how to contact someone that’s not their support bc I can’t even open the app.”

Meanwhile, another commented: “My account was completely disabled. It had me appeal the decision and then it logged me out and now says my username or email isn’t found. I’ve been a user since 2012. I have photos I don’t want to lose on Instagram.”

In a statement on Twitter, Instagram confirmed the outage, adding that the firm is working on a fix.

“We’re aware that some of you are having issues accessing your Instagram account. We’re looking into it and apologise for the inconvenience,” the firm said.
