Inverness-based medical technology firm Aiber has successfully raised £2 million pounds of investment in its latest funding round.

The company, which operates under the trading name of MIME Technologies, develop first aid devices and software designed to manage medical emergencys during flights.

Aiber hopes to further roll out its in-flight technology across the aviation and maritime industries following the fresh investment.

According to the company – which was originally a spin out from Aberdeen university – one leading airline diverts as many as 60 flights a year as a result of medical emergencies in the air.

It is hoped that the company’s technology will benefit thousands of passengers who fall ill on flights, with in-flight medical emergencies becoming more and more commmon in the UK as the population ages.

Speaking about the fresh investment, Aiber co-founder and chief executive Anne Roberts said: “This investment will allow us to accelerate the roll-out of our potentially life-saving solution to more customers in our target sectors.

“Whether in the air or at sea, a medical event in these situations can be incredibly stressful and isolating for those tasked with responding, and we are confident Aiber can reduce the burden and improve passenger health outcomes.”

In-flight diversions can cost an airline anywhere between £25,000 to £500,000. Aiber’s wireless technology – which allows for more informed decisions about a wide range of medical events from burns to heart attacks – will provide support to cabin crew, pilots and medical staff on the ground.
