Meta Platforms’ artificial intelligence system Llama has been approved for use by US government agencies, as the Trump administration continues efforts to integrate commercial AI tools into federal operations.

The General Services Administration (GSA), the government’s purchasing arm, will add Llama to its list of approved systems. Josh Gruenbaum, the GSA’s procurement lead, said the approval ensures that the free tool meets government security and legal standards, allowing agencies to experiment with it.

Llama is a large language model capable of processing data across multiple formats, including text, video, images and audio. Federal agencies will be able to use the tool to accelerate contract reviews and resolve IT issues, among other applications.

The approval of Meta’s AI system follows a broader initiative by the GSA to sign off on tools from other major technology providers. Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Google, Anthropic and OpenAI have also had their systems approved in recent months. According to the GSA, these companies agreed to sell their paid products at discounted rates while meeting the government’s security requirements.

When asked whether the discounts reflected an attempt by technology executives to secure President Donald Trump’s approval, Gruenbaum rejected the suggestion. “It’s not about currying favor,” he said. “It’s about that recognition of how do we all lock in arms and make this country the best country it could possibly be.”

The initiative comes as the administration highlights the role of AI in boosting government efficiency. Gruenbaum said the deployment of tools such as Llama would help agencies improve productivity and resilience across their operations.
