Threads, the new social media app developed my Meta as a rival to Twitter, already has over 100 million users in less than five days, new data says.
Threads went live last Wednesday on both Apple and Android app stores, in 100 countries across the world, garnering 100 million users in less than a week.
Breaking the record set by OpenAI’s ChatGPT app, Threads gained these users despite not launching in the European Union due to concerns the app would not meet GDPR standards.
According to Meta CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg, the app had 10 million users in its first seven hours, and 30 million in the morning after its launch.
Data from Quiver Quantitative, Thread’s 100 million users within its first five days is already nearing a third of Twitters 350 million regular users it fostered since its launch in 2006.

Threads is linked to Instagram, a social media sight owned by Meta – accounts are linked and therefore easy for people to generate and start using, which may contribute to its high uptake.
Elon Musk’s Twitter has already threatened Meta with a lawsuit, calling Threads a copy-cat rather than a rival. Twitter has also claimed that Meta “stole trade secrets” by hiring ex-Twitter staff who were part of massive layoffs imposed by Musk since his takeover.
