According to reports from Business Insider, Microsoft is planning a second round of layoffs shortly after announcing a round of job cuts just last week.

The newest round is set to be small, according to confirmation given to Business Insider, with Microsoft reportedly first informing workers of the job cuts on Tuesday.

The cuts are set to hit a variety of departments, including security, experiences, devices, sales, and gaming.

Last week, Microsoft revealed that it would cut 1% of its global workforce, with poor performers being shown the door first. This merit-based firing scheme was mimicked earlier this week by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The first round of cuts this year were also set to hit the company’s security team.

The company says it is aiming to take a performance-lead management strategy, evaluating workers over the past few months before deciding on the cuts.

According to an internal memo seen by CNBC, Microsoft is asking employees to not expense travel while also pausing hiring efforts in their consultancy department in a bid to cut costs.

With 2025 just over two weeks in and already two major global tech companies announcing multiple layoff rounds, the a new year of redundancies may be well underway.

This follows from last year when Microsoft cut jobs at its cloud departments and its gaming divisions.
