New UK Radar Network Targets ‘Space Warfare’ Threats

Cawdor Barracks in Pembrokeshire will be the home of the Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability, helping to identify objects up to around 22,000 miles from Earth.

A network of radars to protect the UK from space warfare and track space objects is to be built in Pembrokeshire despite local opposition.

Cawdor Barracks, currently home to the 14th Signal Regiment, will see the installation of 27 radar dishes, able track objects as small as a football, and will contribute to the global surveillance of satellites in deep space, according to the government. 

The Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC) programme – unveiled late last year by the Defence Secretaries of Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States – will provide 24/7, all-weather capabilities, and is set to increase AUKUS nations’ ability to characterise objects deep in space up to 22,000 miles (36,000 kilometres) away from earth.

DARC will join a global network of three ground-based radars to be jointly operated with international partners tol assist in critical space-traffic management and contribute to the global surveillance of satellites in deep space. 

These new radar systems have higher sensitivity, better accuracy, increased capacity, and more agile tracking than current radars, allowing for better global monitoring to inform UK defence operations.

The project is designed to provide more detailed intelligence about the nature and activity of satellites, which are projected to increase in number from about 9,000 this year to 60,000 by 2030, following concerns earlier this year about the advancement of space warfare capabilities from states such as Russia.

In May, the US Pentagon said that it believed Moscow had launched a ‘counter space weapon’, a probe capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit. There have also been reported instances of GPS and internet satellites being electronically jammed, with lasers being used to ‘blind’ satellites’ optical sensors.

Commenting on the need for new systems like DARC, Defence Secretary, John Healey said: “Space plays a crucial role in our daily lives – used by everything from our mobile phones to banking services. It is also used by UK Defence to conduct vital tasks such as supporting military operations, navigating forces and gathering intelligence.

“This new radar programme will not only enhance our awareness of deep space, but also help protect our space assets alongside our closest partners.”

The redevelopment of the site is currently subject to a planning application with Pembrokeshire County Council. The council’s granting of planning permission is conditional on DARC meeting all the required safety standards, including environmental and health standards set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection and the World Health Organisation.
