West Scotland is poised to host one of Europe’s largest AI infrastructure hubs, backed by a £15 billion investment from a leading AI firm as part of a mission to deliver up to 2GW of sovereign AI supercomputing capacity in the UK.

As part of its long-term vision, AI Pathfinder plans to make an initial investment next year that will see the start of operations at its North Ayrshire site in the i3 area of Irvine.

Up to 6,400 GPUs will be deployed during the initial phase, with the 1GW site expected to become a key player in Europe’s AI infrastructure landscape, with potential to scale to 1.5GW.

According to North Ayrshire Council, AI Pathfinder’s investment will create substantial employment opportunities, both through the delivery of the site’s construction and in the range of skilled roles that will support its long-term operation.

The council said that the plans align with the ambitions of its own Ayrshire Regional Economic Strategy and with the £251 million Ayrshire Growth Deal, while the region is also acting as a testbed for next-gen communications through the UK Government-funded 5G Innovation Regions programme.

“The scale of this investment will be transformational for our young people and residents. It offers the chance to establish a local skills pipeline across construction, engineering, digital infrastructure, and data centre operations and will deliver major supply chain benefits which will ripple across Ayrshire businesses and beyond.”

AI Pathfinder, spearheaded by entrepreneur Martin Bellamy under the umbrella of Salamanca Group, works to deliver AI-as-a-Service, essentially allowing firms to “rent” AI tools and services from it as a third-party provider on a subscription or pay-as-you-go basis, without needing large investments in hardware, software, or specialised talent.

The company plans to launch its first UK deployment in December in Northamptonshire, with planned investment of up to £3.4 billion as part of its long-term strategy.

“Our UK-based AI-as-a-Service platform will allow government, businesses, and public services to innovate at the speed of hyperscalers, with the security and data privacy of a sovereign solution. 

“AI Pathfinder’s mission to provide the infrastructure to deliver sovereign AI-as-aService is a critical part of ensuring the UK is at the forefront of the AI-powered global economy.”
