Ofcom is calling on initiatives across the UK to promote data literacy among those most vulnerable online.

Ofcom is commissioning 13 organisations across Scotland, England, Northern Ireland, and Wales to help improve digital literacy skills among groups and communities most at risk of online harm.

Each organisation will be trailing an innovative approach to improving the practical online knowledge and understanding of local people who need the most support.

Not everyone has the skills they need to effectively and safely navigate the online world, and Ofcom believes their duty lies in promoting media literacy crucial in fostering a safer online enviornment.

By strengthening media literacy, Ofcom hopes to empower consumers to become informed digital decision-makers, and importantly, identify and protect themselves against harmful content.

The new initiatives will target: older people and those at risk of digital exclusion; people with mental health challenges or disabilities; children aged 10-14; and communities experiencing financial disadvantage.

In Scotland, for example, the Red Chair Highland Ltd. in Inverness is taking part in the initiative, providing tailored support and drop in sessions for older adults based on their interests.
