OpenAI’s announcement closely follows Anthropic’s decision to go public as well.

OpenAI has revealed plans to enter the stock market and list its shares publicly, the latest AI company to do so.

The ChatGPT makers’ decision to go public is much anticipated, but follows on from Anthropic’s announcement to go public from just last week.

OpenAI made a confidential filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, aiming to get an initial public offering (IPO).

The AI firm adds to the roster of big ticket IPO filings, from rival AI firm Anthropic as well as Elon Musks’ firm SpaceX, which expects to hit the Nasdaq this week.

While OpenAI announced its filing, it does not have a set timeline for its stock market debut: “We have not decided on timing yet; it may be a while because there are things we want to do that are likely easier as a private company,” the firm said.

The AI firm reached $852bn at its most recent valuation from private investors, but has been beat out by Anthropic, which saw its valuation reach $965bn.

The two firms are continually pitted against eachother, in no doubt due to recent contract swaps with the US defence department, and with new rival cybersecurity models.

Both firms are still losing more revenue than they are making due to high operational costs, but this does not appear to stop their high evaluations as the AI bubble expands with no sign of contraction.

AI investment has transformed however, as governments and organisations look to fuel the underlying technology and infrastructure that makes AI possible – new data centres, improved chip design, higher compute capabilities.

OpenAI only revealed its plans to trade publicly because “we expect it to leak” the firm said, saying the decision “is a complicated set of tradeoffs.”

After its filing, the firm is now given “the option to go public sooner if that ends up being best.”

Investors highly anticipate how both OpenAI and Anthropic will do on the publci arena, as it could indicate how other AI firms may perform.
