The new models are able to answer complex queries and generate multi-step code, with similar capabilities to PhD students.

OpenAI has launched a new series of AI models – internally referred to as the Strawberry series – which will have improved analytical capabilities to answer harder problems and queries.

The models will be able to take more time processing queries in order to complete complex tasks, including tackling more difficult problems in the realms of science, maths, and coding.

“We trained these models to spend more time thinking through problems before they respond, much like a person would,” OpenAI said in a blog post.

“Through training, they learn to refine their thinking process, try different strategies, and recognize their mistakes.”

The new o1 and o1-mini models were trained to take more time responding to complex problems to mimic the problem-solving process of people, and OpenAI says it shows similar capabilities as PhD students when responding to questions in physics, chemistry, and biology.

In comparison to GPT-4o, the new reasoning model outperformed the last GPT model in maths, with an 83% score on the International Mathematics Olympiad qualifying exam compared to just a 13% score for GPT-4o.

However, the new models are not yet able to browse the internet for answers, or deal with uploaded files or images.

OpenAI says that the new, analytical models are more suited for dealing with complex problems in science, maths, coding, and similar fields.

The company has said that the o1 series excels at generating and debugging complex code, and its o1-mini will offer a faster and cheaper reasoning model that is “particularly effective at coding”, and is 80% cheaper than the o1-preview.

Now, the o1 series has been released as an option on ChatGPT, where prospective users can chose wither o1 or 01-mini manually to answer their queries.

OpenAI has said it is working on solution to have ChatGPT automatically select the appropriate model to answer any query.

Next, OpenAI aims to add web browsing, file and image uploading, and other features to the new models to make them more useful across various work cases.
