OpenAI is trying to expand its influence across the globe and infiltrate further into our collective consciousness in a new initiative to convince governments to fund infrastructure and increase their AI usage.

Dubbed OpenAI for Countries, the new programme will see OpenAI try to better align itself with countries that may not have achieved the capacity for heavy AI use, as well as expanding its stronghold in areas already adopting AI at rapid pace.

The initiative will focus on widening and deepening OpenAI’s reach across the globe.

The expansion of the programme will see OpenAI work on education, health, AI skills training, disaster response and preparedness, cybersecurity, and startup accelerators.

OpenAI will be launching Education for Countries in conjunction with this partnership to help governments integrate AI into their education systems, partnering with eight countries.

The AI firm says that their programme is designed to be flexible and tailored to a country’s needs and capacity for AI, noting that even those with strong AI adoption are often not using AI to its full capacity.

It says it aims to “end the capability gap” when it comes to AI integration, noting that a capability overhang risks some countries pulling ahead with other falling behind.

OpenAI’s new initiative comes in the middle of a range of announcements for the company as it attempts to expand its reach and ventures.

Earlier this week OpenAI announced it would begin trialling advertisements in some of its ChatGPT conversations as it attempts to quell concerns from investors looking for a return on their billions of funding.

The AI giant as well as other big names in tech continue to negotiate with governments and shelve out billions for infrastructure investment and tides turn away from funding model development and towards powering AI.

OpenAI also announced that it would be rolling out age determination tools on ChatGPT to better tailor its answers to the age of its users, following growing backlash from parents and advocacy groups about the AI chatbots safety for young people.
