The Prime Minister has appointed Jade Leung as his office’s new artificial intelligence (AI) advisor.

Leung has been serving as the chief technology officer of the UK’s AI Security Institute, and will replace Matt Clifford, who was asked to create the AI Opportunities Action Plan back in January.

She will split her time between the AI Security Institute and 10 Downing Street, serving both Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Science, Innovation, and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle

As part of the role, she will work to position the UK as the leading nation to help unlock the benefits and prepare for the impacts of transformative AI, working closely with the Prime Minister to harness the technology as it delivers the strong foundations and economic growth which are central to the government’s Plan for Change.

Prior to working with AI Security Institute, Leung was the governance lead at OpenAI, the prolific tech company behind ChatGPT, the most popular large language model available to the public. She left the company in 2023 to take her CTO position at the AI Security Institute.

The aim of the AI Security Institute is to help equip the government with an understanding of the risks associated with AI, undertaking research to try to mitigating these risks.
