The third-party hack is one of the latest in a torrent of cyber-attacks affecting major global firms.

Hackers have stolen some of the personal data of UK Renault customers in a third-party data breach as cyber-attacks continue to rock major businesses.

Drivers were contacted by Renault Group UK to confirm that the firm’s third-party data processing business partner had been targeted by cyber-criminals.

Some customer data had been taken as a result of the hack, with some customers of Dacia vehicles, which are owned by Renault, also affected in the breach.

Personal data such as customer names, gender, phone number, addresses, dates of births, vehicle registration details and identification numbers were compromised in the hack.

However, financial details, such as bank account or card details, as well as passwords, were not affected in the breach.

It is currently unknown how many customers were affected by the breach, though Renault Group UK said that none of its own systems were compromised.

“We are in the process of contacting all affected customers, advising them of the cyber attack and reminding them to be cautious of any unsolicited requests for personal information,” a spokesperson for the firm said.

“Concerned customers should consult https://www.renault.co.uk/data-privacy.html or contact our data protection officer at dataprivacy@renault.co.uk.

“We wish to apologise to all affected customers. Data privacy is of the upmost importance to us and we deeply regret that this has.”

The breach comes close to the heels of the Jaguar Land Rover hack that interrupted the firm’s manufacturing operations, with the firm just saying this week that it expects to see some of its productions restarting in “the coming days”.

Other brands, including Japanese beer brand Asahi, luxury good brands like Gucci, and UK retails like Harrods, Co-Op, and Marks and Spencer facing data breaches.
