Software-as-a-service (SaaS) giant Salesforce is in advanced discussions to acquire cloud data management company Informatica, according to reports from Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal. The talks, however, are not guaranteed to result in a deal and the terms of the acquisition remain unknown.
While both Salesforce and Informatica declined to comment on the rumours, the tech industry awaits further developments regarding this potential blockbuster deal.
If the acquisition proceeds, Salesforce stands to gain access to Informatica’s expertise in utilising AI to enhance data management.
This could benefit Salesforce customers by facilitating the preparation of data for generative AI applications, addressing the need for high-quality data required for AI experimentation.
Secondly, Informatica’s tools could assist in organising metadata from various sources, streamlining data management across Salesforce’s suite of applications.
The acquisition could possibly face regulatory scrutiny and further consolidation in the SaaS industry, potentially impacting Salesforce’s competitive landscape.

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff is reportedly leading the charge for the Informatica acquisition, which could bolster the company’s data integration and management capabilities.
Informatica’s market capitalization has soared from approximately $29 (£23) to over $38 (£30) in 2024, currently valuing the company at over $11 billion (£8.8bn). Salesforce’s pursuit of Informatica reflects its strategic shift towards enhancing data management and addressing investor concerns about growth and profitability.
Should the acquisition proceed, it could rank among Salesforce’s largest deals to date, potentially rivalling the $15.7bn (£12.5bn) purchase of Tableau Software in 2019, $6.5bn (£5.2bn) purchase of MuleSoft in 2018, and the $27bn (£21.6bn) purchase of Slack in 2021. Informatica, previously taken private in 2015, was later re-listed as a public company in 2021 and remains majority-owned by private equity firm Permira.
