Scots Healthtech Device Shows Promise in Cervical Cancer Treatment

Stirling-based healthtech Emblation has been featured in new research published by The Lancet, demonstrating the potential for less painful and more effective treatment for cervical cancer patients.

Emblation’s Swift device was used by a team of scientists at the University of Glasgow to deliver precise doses of microwaves to destroy cancerous cells.

Dr Matt Kidd, Director of Research and Development at Emblation, is calling it the “first and absolutely vital step toward eventually getting tests out of the lab and into medical situations involving real patients.”

Emblation provided the Swift device to the university for research, and helped train the scientists to use it, but had no involvement in the experiments. Dr Kidd expressed that the team at Emblation was thrilled all the same with the promising results published in the Lancet, one of the world’s oldest medical journals. 

The research itself was funded by a Chief Scientist Office grant, focused on treating cervical tumor tissues associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. The scientists grew 3D cancer tissues in the lab and treated them with precise bursts of microwave energy from Emblation’s Swift device.

The effects on cancer cells and surrounding tissues were measured and recorded, revealing sustained, localized cell death at the treatment site, reduced levels of cancer-associated proteins, decreased growth of diseased cells, and increased programmed cell death in tumours.

According to the Lancet, this research presents a new less painful, less invasive method for treating HPV-associated anogenital disease and cancer. Which could be more acceptable for patients, saving time and resources for clinicians and healthcare systems. 

Dr Kidd added: “Our technology has already delivered game changing results in podiatry and dermatology – but all of us at Emblation believe we have only just started to unlock the true potential of microwave therapies. We will continue to support research whenever we can that helps show how our devices may be beneficial in treatments from cancer to cardiac conditions.”
