Aberdeen-based ETZ, raised £3.25 million between Scottish Enterprise and global energy firm bp to construct an energy incubator and scale up hub (EISH).

Scottish Enterprise invested £2 million while bp put forward £1.25 million. The remainder of the funds for the project will be provided through the Scottish Government’s Energy Transition Fund.

ETZ is a not-for-profit dedicated to establishing north east Scotland as a global leader in energy transition to net zero.

The incubator is meant to be the focal point of an innovation campus, one of five across the Energy Transition Zone in Aberdeen, which will become the largest in Scotland.

The EISH will support the creation of renewable energies such as offshore wind, hydrogen, and carbon capture by providing flexible industrial and collaboration space. Manufacturing, supply chain building, technology research, development and commercialisation will all take place in the new hub.

“The expertise and technology developed here is a global success story,” said Doris Reiter, senior vice president North Sea, bp.

She added: “You would be hard-pressed to visit an oil and gas region anywhere in the world and not find Scotland’s influence.”

The hub – which will be located at Harness Road in Altens Industrial Estate – will be 3,000 sqm large. Construction will begin in summer of 2023 and is expected to finish by the summer of 2024.

“We’re at an exciting moment again in this region’s energy story, not least through bp’s own plans to scale up offshore wind, hydrogen production and electric vehicle charging, while continuing to focus on safe, reliable, and low emission production of oil and gas from the North Sea,” said Reiter.

The north east of Scotland is renowned for a rich history in innovation and pioneering entrepreneurial spirit according to ETZ.

The Energy Incubator and Scale Up Hub will help build on that proud reputation, allowing us to expand our vital energy supply chain, and be an integral part of the Innovation Campus and Energy Transition Zone,” said Sir Ian Wood, ETZ Ltd Chairman.
