Edinburgh-based Snugg, which is an online tool that analyses properties to create personalised energy-efficiency improvement plans, has teamed up with the Scottish Building Society.

The partnership is set to give the Society’s members access to resources like energy efficiency plans and financial assistance.

Snugg will also recommend Scottish Building Society members to grants they may be eligible for to fund their projects, and link them with installers that could carry out the work.

The partnership comes on the backdrop of statistics showing that 40% of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions come from residential homes, according to a report by the Scottish Government. According to the report, 47% of homes in Edinburgh have received a C or below on the energy performance certificates (EPC) rating system.

“Everyone has a role in tackling climate change, and that means we do too. Driving change at a local level has an important part to play in helping us to meet the UK’s net zero goals, and partnering with Snugg is one way to do that,” said Paul Denton, CEO of the Scottish Building Society.

According to Snugg, by improving the energy efficiency of Edinburgh residential homes alone, the city could potentially save 250,000 tonnes of carbon annually, which is enough to power over roughly 54,300 commuter cars per year.

“Our mission is to make it simple and affordable for everyone to have an energy efficient home. Currently, homes in the UK rank amongst some of the worst in Europe for energy efficiency and over a fifth of UK emissions come from homes,” said Robin Peters, CEO of Snugg.

“While we know that looking after the environment is a long-term investment, partnering with financial institutions such as the Scottish Building Society brings us a step closer to being able to drive real change – not only making a difference to peoples’ pockets, but also the environment.”

Snugg recently received a significant grant from the Green Home Finance Accelerator (GHFA) — a UK Government initiative funded through the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP) — designed to promote the development of green finance products. Prior to that the company raised £1.2 million in seed round funding from private investors in July 2022.
