Budding tech entrepreneurs in the Highlands and Islands are being invited to an event in Stornoway next week, on Thursday 12th September.

The “Unplugged in Stornoway” event is being organised by CodeBase, who run the Scottish government’s technology startup programme, Techscaler.

It takes place at The Croft Room, Caladh Inn between 5 and 7pm, and can be attended either in-person or online with signup details here.

Anyone interested in the tech startup scene, from seasoned entrepreneurs and tech professionals, to creatives and students, are invited to attend.

Participants will learn about the opportunities available to entrepreneurs in the Highlands and Islands via Techscaler.

The event will also include the launch of a new Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) Techscaler Kickstart grant scheme.

This will run until March 2025 and offer grants of £5,000 to £10,000 to help ambitious tech founders and entrepreneurs develop their ideas for business applications.

Speaking on the upcoming event, Mark Sutherland, who’s head of regional engagement for Techscaler in the Highlands and Islands, said: “We’re excited to bring Techscaler to Stornoway and the Western Isles, a vibrant community with tremendous potential for innovation and growth.

“The event is a great opportunity to connect with local tech founders, enthusiasts and stakeholders, and introduce them to the resources and support that Techscaler offers.

“We believe that by fostering these connections and providing the right tools, we can help the next generation of tech leaders in the Highlands and Islands thrive.”

HIE director of enterprise and community support, Rachel Hunter, also commented: “The creative application of technology is a key driver of business growth and can be particularly impactful in rural areas.

“We’re delighted to be working with CodeBase to support Techscaler clients by providing a grant scheme that will complement the support on offer and look forward to meeting existing and potential tech entrepreneurs in Stornoway.”
