Enterprise analytics firm Alteryx has unveiled insights from independent research illuminating the workforce dynamics in the age of AI.
As the UK braces for the impending transition to an AI-infused labour market, the study underscores a pressing need to realign skilling priorities. Titled Defining the Enterprise of the Future, the research underscores a notable gap between the skills currently emphasised in hiring practices and those crucial for maximizing AI’s potential.
The study suggests that while AI’s impact is palpable across today’s workforce, staying ahead and adapting to the evolving business milieu is imperative. Anticipated roles like the chief AI officer are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping a comprehensive AI strategy. Interestingly, over 400 individuals globally already hold the chief AI officer designation in their LinkedIn titles, highlighting the perceived criticality of this role.
Despite this recognition, the current hiring landscape skews toward technical roles. AI applications engineers, AI research scientists, and software engineers top the list of urgent hiring priorities, with 37%, 33%, and 32% of respondents respectively citing these roles as crucial. These statistics underscore the shifting dynamics within data and IT teams, with roles such as repetitive coding and database administration facing potential obsolescence.
However, despite the looming AI skills gap, where demand has outpaced supply, the study highlights a continued emphasis on recruiting for technical proficiency over soft skills. This raises pertinent questions about the efficacy of current recruitment priorities in preparing for an AI-centric future.
Libby Duane-Adams, chief advocacy officer at Alteryx, stresses the importance of proactively building and shaping the future workforce to thrive in an AI-driven era, saying: “The rapid rise of AI requires business leaders to build and shape the future workforce now to thrive or risk lagging behind in a future transformed by a seismic shift in the skills needed for the era of intelligence.”

The survey, conducted by Coleman-Parkes targeting 2,800 IT decision-makers, data analysts, and business leaders globally, revealed several key insights, including:
– Only 33% of respondents prioritize building human capacity and preparing for a labour market transition in an AI world.
– 57% believe creativity will be the top skill supplied by humans in an AI-dominated environment.
